Getting What You Need Out Of Others
We all, at some point, need to get people to do something they don't want to do. People are often pent-up on emotion and don't recognize much beyond their own perception. So, in order to get what you need from them, you may have to apply one of these 4 psychological techniques.
The first psychological technique is to use their insecurities against them.
In order to use their insecurities against them, you will have to identify all areas that are a threat to any position, power or influence they carry. You will also need to identify what situation will work best on the individual that will place them under the most pressure.
The goal is to make the individual fear the consequences of not complying with your wishes. This could include exposing any negative actions of theirs, showing them the consequences that may be taken against them; loss of personal validation or reputation and loss of position.
In order to create vision, you need to show them what they they can eventually have. The idea here is to get them to recognize that they are missing out on something.
You can achieve this by showing them examples of someone else who did something similar, and got great results. This will show them that when they do what you need them to do, they may receive special attention or recognition, remuneration or position.
The third psychological technique is to make them think it's their decision.
People are stubborn and they will not do something they do not want to do - unless, of course, there is something in it for them.
If you have to manipulate someone to do what you need them to do, you must conceal your intentions and make them think that this is best for them, and there is no real benefit in it for you. You can achieve this by presenting to them, all the ways they will benefit from their efforts.
The last psychological technique is to cast doubt.
Act professional - as though this is a business transaction and all the cards are in your hand. You achieve this by coming at them with facts. You also may want to raise questions you know they cannot answer; this will make them doubt themselves.
As long as you remain 'in authority' and act professional, the individual may feel as though they are your subordinate; this is where they begin to doubt themselves. This is also where you show them evidence that their compliance is in their best interest for an overall positive outcome.
